Melton Mowbray - Lincoln - York

Melton Mowbray - Lincoln-York

After  great sleep, I left Whissendine and headed for one more family discovery opportunity.

Jo had drawn a mud map of where our relatives lived and worked in Melton Mowbray (BTW Melton in Melbourne is named after this town -  Hello Brian and kids!)

So.. the first thing you see is the Church

But I had details of the shops that were owned both by my Great Grandfather TB Hunt and his  daughter Emma Salt  (my grandmother's sister). Apparently TB Hunt sold out his business to Mac Fisheries and his daughter opened a shop a few doors down and out did the Mac Fisheries business!

Little alcove in the shop where Emma Salt used to sit an supervise all monetary transactions
Emma's shop is now a Fair Trade shop and the ladies in there were delightful. They took me around through the back and I saw the outside of the shop (see pic above)
Jo told me she lived in the flat above this shop as a child and remembers her grandmother running the business...

I went into the computer shop that was originally owned by TB Hunt and explained  that I was related  to the original  owner... blah.. blah.. The manager was really interested and gave me the email address of a local who had lots of photos of the local shops in days gone by... I have passed that email address on to Jo.

Apparently this shop was burnt down at some stage but the pillars out the front survived and the image of the Swan on the front of the building..

Note Swan on front of building - just as well we beat them in the Grand Final!!!
Melton was a lovely little town... here's a few more pics..

So after Melton Mowbray I was ultimately heading for York... but I was probably a bit late, given that it starts to get dark at 4.30pm

But I set Gaby Garmin and told her to take me via Lincoln....

Got there easily enough and I had a thought that I might wander around the town for a while, but it was a bit hard to get a car park as usual. But the town was dominated by the Cathedral which sat atop the hill and was very obvious to all and sundry. So after getting a bit lost (as usual) I just did a visual  aim for the Cathedral. And again after a few false starts I found  a car park  close to the Cathedral.

I just wish I had more time to really explore the Cathedral because it looked so beautiful

Found a nice little pub near the Cathedral in what was called the Cathedral Quarter and had some very warming soup. Still very chilly today ... I think that balmy weather was all an illusion!

Then once again I had to move on as I didn't have any accommodation booked in York. I had selected a possible  motel, but hadn't made an actual booking and it gets dark early these days...

Had a few issues getting into York and went around the same roundabout about 3 times... but eventually rocked up to my preferred motel and was able to book a room. In fact I booked it for two nights, because it was dark by the time I arrived and I really wanted to see York, so I've given myself a whole day to do it tomorrow.

There's a pub next door so I was able to go to the carvery and have.... Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding (not as nice as yours Sue Ballard!!)

But when in York....

So now I have to do some research to see what I want to do in York tomorrow. I'm a little bit out of town again, but I'm sure I'll find a way to get into the centre of town and go for a walk. As I drove in, I saw the walls surrounding the town  so might need to go and explore further.

Nice once again to have at least 2 nights in the one place... Just means I might have to re-arrange the next few days, as I'm due in Fort William on Nov 10-11.

Funnily enough, I sat next to a couple in the carvery at dinner tonight and they run a bed and breakfast in Stirling outside Glasgow.

Funny where life takes you on the road....
