Glencolmcille and Slieve League

Glencolmcille and Slieve League

Me at Slieve League Cliffs
Today was a day of two parts, so I think I might split my blog into two today, otherwise it might get a bit long.

The morning was magical!

I kept my promise to Geraldine to be up for a 7.30am breakfast, so I was out on the road by 8.30 - very novel for me! Yet again the morning was mostly clear, so I  decided to have a look around Glencolmcille, with a few suggestions from Geraldine under my belt.

In the morning light, Glencolmcille looked fabulous... a bit different from my very anxious thoughts last night.

So I start with a  pic of  where I was staying the Millstone B&B... highly recommended if you ever go to Glencolmcille (note new spelling - that's how the locals spell it!)

It was pretty cold, and the sun doesn't rise until about 9am according to my host, so it was a bit chilly out there. I went to have a look at the beach - just beautiful...

My next stop was the beach at Malin Beg. Again it was just magical as the sun was starting to rise over the mountains. I just sat there for quite a while and took it all and said my "Thank you Gods" for rescuing me last night!

One last stop on the first part of my journey was The Glencolmcille Woollen Mills, where I bought a few things, so was given a complimentary cup of coffee! And they had a toilet which was very handy in this part of the world!

Very green...!!!
The next part of the journey was just magical. Superlatives fail me as I try to describe it.

It is called the Slieve League Cliffs and I had read about them on line, and the guide books describe the drive up  as dangerous. Some said there were precipitous drops on the side and only room for one car to pass, so I was a little nervous about this trip. But the man in the Woollen Mills assured me they had been fixing it up of late and making it easier to drive there. So, I gulped hard and thought I would take the plunge!

When I arrived at the first car park, there were all sorts of  works going on, but the best part was there was a car in front of me and while we were waiting for the machinery to move I spoke to the driver and he assured me it would be Ok to go up there.  He was an archaeologist from County Clare (my country!) and he had 3 other ladies with him, so I was really grateful that there would be someone   up there with me. I do get  a bit spooked sometimes when I'm the only person at a place, so once again, the hand of God was smiling upon me!

And the journey was soooooooo worth it. It  was magnificent.

According to my guide book the  cliffs rise to 595m above the sea,  almost twice  as high as the  Eiffel Tower, and also twice as high as more famous Cliffs of Mohr

It was freezing cold up there and the wind was whipping up off the Atlantic. I don't think I've been warm all day since....

It was a bit chilly....

After a while the sun came out and shone on the cliffs.
Once again words and pictures cannot convey the magnificence of nature in the raw. It was amazing to say the least. I was so glad I  took the risk and went  up there, because I really was in two minds about it. Having those people there made all the difference.

I waited till my new found archaeologist friend was ready to drive back down and asked him if I could follow him, to which he happily agreed. The road was a bit scary, I have to admit, but  apparently it's a whole lot better than it used to be. I would hate to see it in previous times!

After that my day was quite mundane, but there's still a bit of show and tell to come, so I might start a new post.
