Angers Day 2 - Cathedral and the town
The Cathedral of St Maurice
After the big tour of the Castle, I decided to follow the walking tour recommended by theTourist Bureau. But I didn't quite follow it exactly and went almost straight to the Cathedral.
I think I had forgotten how Catholic France is. There are more Churches than pubs here in France - just the opposite of Ireland!!!
It was a lovely medieval Church with all the appropriate stained glass windows. Some of the stories portrayed in these windowsare quite gory...
Not sure if you can see it with these pics, but there was one story about St Vincent D'Espagne and all th gory things that happened to him, and they built a whole stain glass window about his torture and death.... But in the end God rescued him etc.. etc..
It was back to candle lighting time. But I'm still struggling to identify the coins, so I had a choice of 3 candles -
€1.5 or
€2 or
€5
Now, I don't want to be mean, but does it mean I get value for my prayers by purchasing the cheap one, or do my prayers last longer if I purchase the dearer one...??? Does God notice bigger candles...??? Hmmmm... I must have a deep theological discussion about this one day... Or do we even need a candle at all..
Anyway, it was sorted by the coins I had in my purse... only had a 2 euro, so that was what my prayers were worth today.
And that brings me to another conundrum... the reason I didn't have any coins left is because of tipping... Life can be so complicated sometimes... When to tip and how much to tip... In Australia it's usually pretty straight forward - unless you go out to a restaurant or something., w are not renowned for our tipping. But it makes life simpler....
There's so much to learn on the road...
Speaking of such things, I was a bit over ham and cheese baguettes, so had a lovely bowl of pasta in the city square today.
And a glass of wine and a coffee. And it came to
€17.90, so that's why I have no coins in my purse....
It was a lovely town to walk through and full of charm and life. It also has a tram running through it's centre, but I didn't manage to get a pic of that. Sometimes I feel a bit dorky taking pics in mainstream situations...
Anyway, I was home by about 3 pm, as it looked like the weather was changing - and sure enough tonight it is raining and very cold outside. I've been blessed with my weather so far so I can't complain. And I was thinking of having a nice easy day tomorrow to gird my soul for driving in France on Monday! So, go to Sunday Mass, do some washing, start packing the case again, and write up about the story of this wonderful place.
Tomorrow I hope to just let some of the charism of St Marie Euphrasie wash over me, so that I can bring her story back to our girls and our school at St Clare's.
Just one more to finish up on..Apparently Angers was quite severely bombed during WW2 and I found this plaque outside yet another Church. How lucky we are to live in Australia...
A bientot....
